Terra Incognita

Venue: Arquipelago. Centro de Artes Contemporâneas. | www.arquipelagocentrodeartes.azores.gov.pt

We present a selection of new drawings made by Patricia Dauder during her artistic residence at Terra Incógnita, on the island of São Miguel. This set of works invites us to reflect on time, on the idea of space and on the maritime history of the Azorean islands.

Dauder has always been interested in the maritime environment and culture. We can identify her interest in the physical world, the organic, but also in the idea of the fragmentation of forms. She presents us a microcosm of multiple associations and iconographies of things that we may or may not recognize, like an abstract lexicon built by the artist on fragmented, literary and historic memories, but also upon her recent experience in this island.

Dauder’s drawings, which are a result of long processes of addition and substraction, leads us to a remote place. Layer by layer, fragment by fragment, shape by shape, she transports us into her idea of the island as a geography, a history, and a mental state.
